What is Pbis?
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports. It is a system of behavior management and support that helps teachers adopt and organize behavior interventions. PBIS is a system focused on preventing behavior issues for all students and creating an environment for that enhances academic and social outcomes throughout the school. There are three tiers of support.
Tier 1 is a component of the Lincolnwood's PBIS system that focuses on school systems for all students. It includes three major components: setting expectations, positive reinforcement system (superstars), documenting system problems and need for further intervention (referrals), and celebrating efforts.
Tier 2 is the second level of support for students that need additional interventions than those in place for Tier 1. These interventions can be quickly accessed and are usually designed to be low-level effort with maximum effect. They can be flexible to individual students but are usually delivered from a more uniform set of school-wide interventions. Supports at the Tier 2 level include Check In/Check Out (CICO) or Social Academic Instructional Groups (SAIG).
Tier 3 is the third level of supports that need more intensive support that is designed around the individual child. The students that receive Tier 3 support display high-risk behaviors and have a history of academic or behavioral difficulties over an extended period of time and that have been unsuccessful with Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions. The student receiving this level of support typically make up 1-5% of the student population.
PBIS is used throughout District 65 and the state of Illinois. For more information, please visit the National PBIS Website: www.pbis.org/

WHAT IS THE LINCOLNWOOD WAY?
The Lincolnwood Way are our school-wide expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe. All behavior expectations fall under these three main categories and help to define what appropriate behavior is throughout the school. Click on the following link to see what behaviors are expected throughout the school: Lincolnwood Matrix
WHAT IS a superstar?
Superstars are a component of PBIS and are used to acknowledge and encourage positive student behavior. Teachers and staff give a child a superstar when he or she has followed the expectations of the classroom or school. The entire classroom can earn a Class Superstar when everyone in the class is demonstrating positive behavior. As the students earn class superstars, they will set and work toward classroom goal. When the goal is reached, the class has a celebration. These can include extra recess, a stuffed animal and pajama day, extra time on the computer, or other fun, healthy ways to celebrate all the work the class has done. Throughout the year, the entire school will celebrate as a whole.
WHAT IS A cool tool?
A cool tool is a lesson plan, taught through Sharing Circles, that teaches about a certain behavior or set of expectations . For example, if the school staff notices that cafeteria is getting a bit messy, all classrooms will be taught the expectations for the cafeteria through a cool tool. The school staff will put extra attention into cafeteria behavior and give more superstars for students meeting expectations. Teaching cool tools helps to focus student behavior and work together as a school to make a positive change. Throughout the year, cool tools will be taught to reinforce expectations and to help reinforce positive behavior in an area of concern.
WHAT IS A referral?
A referral is another component of PBIS communication and is data collection tool that assists the staff in documenting behavior issues. If a student is having trouble following expectations, a teacher will write a referral to document the behavior and the consequences that followed. Each month, the PBIS teams looks at the data collected to see trends and plan interventions. The referral itself is not a “punishment” but rather a means of collecting information from around the school. Click here to see some of the behaviors that a referral can be given for and our school guidelines for the steps following a major level referral.
WHAT If a child needs more support?
If a student needs additional supports, he or she will be referred to the PBIS Tier 2/3 team. These teams work with the classroom teachers and families to offer extra interventions to assist the student throughout the day. These can include Check In-Check Out (CICO), Social-Academic Groups, mentoring, and more. Students are identified for these additional supports through classroom and referral data as well as through teacher and parent input. If you think that Tier 2/3 interventions would benefit your child, please contact your child's classroom teacher.
WHAT is cico?
CICO is an intervention includes a beginning of the day check-in and an end of the day check in with a CICO coach, a Lincolnwood teacher or staff member that has volunteered to work with the students receiving CICO support. Each student involved is given a CICO plan, which allows them to receive feedback on social or academic behavior concerns throughout the day. During the student’s day, he/she is given points for following expectations in each period/subject. The student works with his/her coach to set goals and reflect on the day. The CICO program helps students be reflective, build confidence, and to develop an additional positive relationship at Lincolnwood.
How is pbis implemented at lincolnwood?
All the pieces of PBIS –expectations, superstars, celebrations, cool tools, and referrals – come together to create a system that supports positive student behavior.
This PBIS teams meets twice a month to look at data and the systems of the school. The data and plans are shared with the entire staff through team and staff meetings. PBIS is an evolving system that grows and changes as Lincolnwood grows and changes.
For additional information, please visit the Lincolnwood PBIS Handbooks: Tier 1 Handbook, Tier 2 Handbook, and Tier 3 Handbook.
